Having been born in London, it was an effortless decision to choose, “The Great Fire of London”, as my topic. Even though I left when I was young, I have alway been fascinated by the history of London. Before this project was assigned, I didn’t even know that London had such a fire. Having gone to London a few years ago, I visited places like St. Paul’s Cathedral which had been re-built because of the fire. At first I was wary of choosing this topic because of the lack of primary resources. But with a couple of visits to the downtown Houston Public Library and surfing the web, I acquired a great deal of information.
The first thing I did, after choosing the topic, was to go to Google and get a quick outline of the Great Fire. From there, I went to independent websites that talked
about the history of the fire. I looked up biographies about key players that fought the fire and reconstructed London. After surfing the web, I visited my local library and checked out books about the entire history of London. I didn’t find much there, so I went to the larger library across from Houston’s City Hall. I found a great deal of books concerning the Great Fire of London and that is where I got most of my information. After surfing the web, I found there was a Great Fire of London Museum. I went to their website and readthrough all of their articles including timelines. While I was there, I searched on the artifacts in their exhibits. I found many paintings and diary entries as well as a couple of other artifacts that survived the fire. After citing these, I decided to speak with a friend in London about her thoughts on the Great Fire. She brought a few more points to my attention.
For the past two years, I have done exhibits for my presentation category. This year, I really wanted to challenge myself. I wanted to change things up this year, so I decided to make a website. I went to the most reliable website I could find which was, “weebly.com”. This way, I can share it with my friends and family around the world. After formatting my website, I added basic information as well as an introduction to the Great Fire of London. I wrote about important people and included my own timeline. I also added information about the Black Plague of 1665 to help give some background information to my topic.
The Great Fire of London was a major turning point in history. Not only did it reconstruct London but it also changed the way the world fought fires and built houses. Although the fire did do a great deal ofharm, it also got rid of the plague that had previously killed 68,000 people in the previous two years!
